Should you run a contest? This might sound like a silly question but it is actually quite important when deciding on any marketing campaign. Some businesses will simply not benefit from running a Facebook contest so make sure yours will. If you decide that running a Facebook contest is the right marketing strategy for your business then it is time to set some goals. What do you want to achieve? Do you want to feature a new product or service? Are you looking to increase brand awareness? Or do you simply want to increase the amount of “Likes” on your page? Whatever you are looking to achieve make sure you set a goal and don’t just run a contest because other people are.
Facebook has an extensive list of “do’s and don’ts” so make sure you familiarise yourself with them before running a contest. For example, you are not allowed to use features of Facebook such as the “Like” button as a way for people to enter your competition or vote. You have a choice of 4 contest types: sweepstakes, essay, photo and video. Essay, photo and video contests will provide your page with lots of content but they require more effort by your customers to enter. Sweepstakes are by far the easiest for customers to enter and are also quick for you to setup as they require less information for submission.
It is very common at the moment to offer a brand new Apple iPad and offering one of these will very likely gain you a lot of entries, but unless your business is related to the Apple range (i.e. your business sells accessories or develops apps) look at other options. Offer something relating to your business such as giving away one of your own products or services. At the end of the day you want people that are interested in your product/service to enter rather than anyone entering just to get a big-ticket prize like the iPad.
Don’t let your contest flop because it is too complicated to enter or understand, the simpler it is for someone to enter the more likely you are to receive a larger amount of entries.
You have completed the setup of your contest but how is anyone going to know about it unless you promote it? Place a banner on your website, write a blog or news post about it, tweet about it, post it to your Facebook timeline, send out a message to your email database, just get it out there so people know about it. Also, make sure you integrate share buttons so that people that enter can share the competition with friends, family or colleagues. Remember, the easier it is for people to share, the faster the word can spread and the more people you will reach!
Run your Facebook contest the right way and you will gain more fans and a lot more business!
